Paris Pręt-a-Porter Fall 2006

PARIS, Feb 26, 2006/ FW/ ---- Still bleary eyed from the hectic Milan season, journalists and photographers flocked into Paris today as the pręt-a-porter season starts. Though the first day is usually reserved for emerging designers, the presence of Balmain and Yohji Yamamoto on the calendar made the first day a must-attend for most.

The temperature in Paris is as cold as in Milan, but the sun peeking out of the clouds is a welcome sight. After a rainy and cloudy week, some sunshine is a vast improvement. It did help to brighten up the day for those who are sleep deprived and just basically more than just tired.

A lot of people believe that the jet-setting life of fashion is glamorous. Of course, the book and upcoming movie, ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ had helped many to question that myth. Because truly, how many people wants to work 12-hour days everyday, including weekends, get about 4 to 5 hours of sleep and expected to be 110% efficient the whole time.

Yet, somehow, the fashion flock always does! So, there is a lot to be admired among these men and women who move with the fashion flock.

That’s the reason why the accident last week in Milan during the Fendi show wherein the pit collapsed and a photographer was hurt was more than unfortunate. It is very sad.

In the eyes of the world, fashion is glitz is glamour, yet those of us who actually work it know and understand that the working conditions have a lot to be desired. True, most of us chose this life (including this journalist). It’s also true that even before most of us arrived in the scene, these conditions were already existing.

No medals are given to the fashion flock for a job well done. There is no Pulitzer Prize waiting to be had for a fashion journalist or photographer. Yet, we still do it simply because we are professionals doing our jobs.

So, to close, I’ll borrow from the mantra of the United States Postal Service… ‘Sleet and snow, rain or shine, we deliver’ fashion news.
