PARIS, Mar 6, 2006/ FW/ --- Fashion is a lot like life; defined by seasons, directional at times and once and a while, we get lost in translation. For Yuki Torii, the opening sequence of the background music said it all… ‘It’s a lot like life.’
It started strong with an oversized parka with fur and ruffles, truly within the trends and definitive of the season. There were hooded fur coats and trench coats to keep a lady warm.
There were even innovative approaches, like using inverted seams on skirts that from afar, they look like box pleats. Pretty and charming with a touch of sophistication, something a girl would want to add to her wardrobe.
Then, somehow, we got lost in translation with the appearance of a down-filled jacket. Where did that come from?
But all was not lost, everything got back on track with the day jackets and skirts that flared at the hips using gores and godets. Tailored women’s suits in crinkled fabrics with appliqués also looked good.
There were multiple variants of the coats from short-cropped jackets to furs. Slim fit trousers also appeared, completing the gamut of expectations. There was also the beautiful rendition of veined stitching made to look like accordion pleats used in dresses.
It’s a lot like life… you hit a bump, and then move on. A good collection overall, except for a few pieces that could have been edited out; but then, it won’t be within the theme, right?
So, it would be safe to assume that it was intended to be that way. Perhaps, that’s the way it should have been done, that’s why the background music set the tone.
