Alena Akhmadullina Spring 2006: Honoring Mother Russia and Her People
Paris Prêt-a-Porter (Paris Women's Ready-to-Wear) Spring 2006

PARIS, Oct 2, 2005/ FW/ --- Alena Akhmadullina’s muse was Mother Russia and her people, as the emerging designer took inspiration from the national Russian festivals, and village holidays for her Spring / Summer 2006 collection.

The invitation for the show was shaped like a boar, and opens into an ethnic cartoon character, making it stand out among the dozens of mail received for fashion week.

It also raised expectation for the freshman design talent, and she did not disappoint, presenting a very creative and ethnically feminine collection this afternoon to a full capacity crowd at the Carrousel de Louvre.

Using traditional Russian costumes as templates, Akhmadullina sent sheered skirts and blouses embellished with original prints that were stimulated by popular ethnic designs and by the works of Lyubarov.

Tiny roses were hand painted on the fabric, giving it a very buoyant summery feel. Tie-dyed were used to create graphical prints, again original designs by Akhmadullina.

Crocheted cardigans and vests were proposed as outerwear, wherein the rose icon was repeated, this time handmade.

What made the catwalk show very memorable were the masks used. They stand as works of art on their own. This was done to follow the ethnic theme established by the invitation.

According to the press notes, Russian ‘folk people would disguise themselves as animals’ during festivals and holidays.

And with this collection, Akhmadullina brought center stage the novelty enjoyed by Russian folks and then translated them into modern silhouettes.
