PARIS, Jan 31, 2003/ FW/ --- The men's shows this season in Paris were notable for their brilliance and innovation, and with 44 different collections to chose from, it was hard to narrow the field to just four.

But for the record, here are this editor's picks.

The Dior Homme collection was brilliant: on the level of Haute Couture, with a finesse of detail and craftsmanship that is a tribute to the atelier.

Though the final touches were not finished until the last minute, the result was splendid.

Backstage, Sydney Tolenado was emotional, and Bernard Arnault was literally beaming.

Hedi, who was dressed in a leather bomber jacket with chains wrapped around his waist, pulled off his strongest collection ever for Dior.

Though he was besieged by reporters and celebrities, he took a moment to speak about the collection.

Referring to the gold highlighting, he explained "I chose to be brilliant because the époque is so sad".

Meanwhile, at Jean-Paul Gaultier, this most recent show brought his men's collection on par with the finesse of his Haute Couture and Ready-to-Wear lines for women.

Inspired by "The Gangs of New York", Gaultier turned out a highly masculine collection that saw some of the finest tailoring yet from this master couturier.

Judging from the frequent outbreaks of applause, he clearly energized his large following.

Helmut Lang seems to be enjoying a splendid comeback since his return to Paris.

His innovative show brought with it a collection designed for a fast paced 21st century man.

From sublimely cut evening suits, to a vest strung of aluminum, it was Lang at his best from beginning to end.

Finally, one newcomer to the Paris scene deserves special mention.

Denis Simachëv, a 28 year old Russian, presented an engaging show on a shoestring budget.

His funky mix of street-smart East meets West, from fur lined parkas to flower strewn tuxedos, was a refreshing change from the interminable pinstripe suit seen elsewhere on the runways.

All in all, this was a bright season in the city of light.

Would that the world around could only catch on fast.
