Seventeen Reveals Teens Try at Least 10 Prom Dresses to
Get The Perfect Prom Queen Look

Apr 22, 2002/ FW/ --- According to a recent poll conducted by Seventeen Magazine, 55% of teens try on at least 10 prom dresses, with 9% buying more than one in search of their perfect outfit.

From the same poll, Seventeen found out that two-thirds of teens started shopping several months ago and that almost half of the respondents are going for the glam look this year to be Hollywood-style prom queens.

Prom and prom-related expenses make up a $2.75 bilion industry, with teens spending on average $203 for a prom dress. The dress purchase accounts for less than half of the $530 that teens spend on prom-related expenses, including accessories, beauty products and after prom activities.

"Prom is an important night for many teens and we wanted to determine firsthand what they planned for this year," said Annemarie Iverson, Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen Magazine. "Finding the latest, fabulous outfit for prom still seems to be one of the biggest parts of planning and remains a large expense for teens."

Seventeen magazine identified a number of hot trends and styles for this year's perfect prom queen looks.

Iverson suggests a great way to have a unique, one-of-a-kind outfit is to go vintage, by searching the vintage shops, or even rummaging through mom's closet.

Another trend this year is the Latin look - lots of lace, ruffles and tierred skirts and everything from ribbons to flowers in vibrant, bright colors make this style.

Prom-goers can even sport hot denim evening dresses which are big this season, according to Iverson.

Tid bits about the prom that Seventeen found out via their poll:

  • Young women are confident in their own look/style, as 73% indicated they look "different" for the prom, but definitely like themselves.
  • 83% of teens polled are going to the prom, most on "traditional" dates.
