Milan, Jan 17, 2001/ FWD/ --- Romeo Gigli is in a gentlemanly mood, albeit one tinged with
the blues.
The collection he presented Wednesday in Milan was dedicated to "disenchanted youths and
tough lone riders [who] hang out on street corners with style as their only weapon," according
to his program notes. What appeared, however, would have looked just fine at a country-house
hunt ball with your kid brother's rock band playing in the drawing room.
Not afraid to stand out? Try Gigli's bold cricket-striped redingotes. Keen to make a dramatic
entrance? Then pick up his sporty jackets made in a rainbow of sherbet-colored velour stripes.
And don't worry about global warming - Gigli whipped up some superb faux astrakhan coats in
warm browns and pale grays that would keep even the chilliest fashion victim warm on the
steppes.
Gigli's collection came in his traditional naïve palette of orange, russet and soft yellow,
but with more than his usual dose of eccentricity.
In knits, Gigli went for skinny zippered cardigans that harkened back to Carnaby Street in
1968, when it was at its most colorful, as did the Chelsea boots in dark brown. For parties,
Gigli favored absurdist, tight paisley suits. Frequently it was all blindingly over-the-top,
like with his turquoise satin suits. And why not?
