Milan, Jun 29, 2002/FWD/ --- It's a good thing that Romeo Gigli's man this season was a
"Ulysses of the new millennium, a man who travels, runs, burns, and flies in search of his
own Ithaca," because he has enough outfits for several lifetimes and lifestyles.
Gigli offered a constant stream of choices for his nomad, as he paired large checked jackets
with boldly striped pants, floral shirts and paisley printed ties.
The colorful mix of patterns was shown in a plethora of variations -- sometimes the jackets
were thinly striped, the pants lightly checked and the shirts bore the bold paisley -- but
the visual overhaul never let up.
"These are clothes that can be worn anywhere" said the Italian designer of the colorful
jubilee after the show, "this man is going where ever he wants."
When the looks were pared down from the frenzied pattern fest they revealed some wonderful
summer fabrics, like embroidered denims, cotton foulards, and batique prints, which stood out
in bright red-oranges and hues of sea blue.
Although Gigli showed many pant constructions, his favorite seemed to be a high-waisted,
peg-legged version whose tight crotch is something of an anomaly on this season's
Milan catwalks.
"This is a silhouette I've been playing with for awhile," explained the designer, who was
himself wearing the pants, "but I like to offer a wide variety of shapes. An attitude of
freedom is most important."
The pants looked best when worn simply, with an open pinstriped shirt and suspenders.
But when they were paired up with bubble toe, two-tone shoes, Gigli seemed to imply that a
trip to the circus might also be on Ulysee's itinerary.
And in life's great adventure, why the heck not?
