SYDNEY, May 8, 2003/ FW/ --- The show notes said that in a "New York City time warp,
Josephine Baker hooks up with Blondie."
If the show was a tribute to the great actress and performer Josephine Baker, then
design duo Heidi Middleton and Sarah-Jane Clarke missed the point.
It's not to say that it was not a good collection, because it was.
It's just that, the collection was more of hip hop and biker chic converged into one.
Hip hop has moved into the cultural mainstream. Once a part of the African-American
youth subculture, hip hop has now become part of the overall American youth culture.
With the release of UPN's new series Platinum and Eminem winning the Academy Awards for
Best Song in his movie 8 Mile, all questions about hip hop's popularity have
disappeared.
So, Sass & Bide's Spring 2004 collection will find that it has a bigger audience than
what Heidi Middleton and Sarah-Jane Clarke originally intended.
And that is what you call a pleasant surprise.
