Scherrer: No Business Like Show Business
By: Timothy Hagy
Paris, Jan 24, 2003/ FW/ --- Stéphane Rolland again presented a line for men with his
Spring 2003 couture show, and the masculine side was arguably the strongest part of
the event.
In a style that mixed The Great Gatsby with Miami Vice, Rolland sent out a collection of
white suits tapered at the waist and cut tight enough through the thighs to be highly erotic.
There was no shortage of toned muscles showing either, given that vests were worn shirtless.
A tux replete with a satin sash certainly made a striking statement, as did one set of
trousers affixed with a fringe of tubular sequins.
But getting attention is not hard to do when gaudiness is shoved right in your face, as
was the case on the women's side.
A scene from NBC's "Friends (Number 1 comedy worldwide) comes to mind: the humorous vignette
where Phoebe accidentally sees Chandler and Monica "doing it" up against the window.
Phoebe turns to the camera screaming "oh my eyes", trying to mask them from the tawdry scene.
Well yesterday, the French Prime Minister's wife tried to do the same thing with her 8 year
old daughter the moment the wedding dress appeared.
Strings of rubies and diamonds were laced together to form what little there was of it,
but once the outer cape was lifted, well, you might just as well have been front stage for
a lap dance in Las Vegas.
If it was supposed to conjure up the vision an X-rated Jeannie, then the idea was a
complete success.
As for the rest of the collection, aside from a few Gloria Swanson era head-wraps that
evoked 20s Hollywood, there wasn't a lot to be commended.
My eyes hurt, my head hurt, and my ears ached from the blasting soundtrack that had Ethel
Mermen belting out "There's no business like show business."
Then again, gathering from the spellbound gaze of the audience, the show was a winner.
