Shawn by Yohanna Logan Fall 2003
Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall 2003

Shawn: Hot & Flirtatious
By: Lael Ward-Shapiro

LOS ANGELES, Apr 6, 2003/ FW/ --- Last Thursday, walking into the showroom where Shawn's Fall 2003 collection would exhibit was like walking into a party. No one was sitting, music was blaring and glasses of champagne were being served to excited attendees. Nearly center room, Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray stood patiently as photographers gathered to snap his picture.

The word had been out for days that Shawn's Fall 2003 collection would be hot.

The Make-Up stylist Geoffrey Rodriguez stood back near the exit watching the room, excited about the show, contented that his part in the show was finished.

"The challenge here," he told FW, "was that Yohanna wanted all of the models to look the same - clean, fresh…"

He was speaking of Shawn designer Yohanna Logan and we'd all soon see if the collection was as fresh as the make-up he'd applied.

As soon as it was announced that the show would begin people began taking their seats. Those without assigned seats clamored for the small supply of standing room. No one wanted to miss out on the show.

Twice during the program the music cut out, and rather than allow the models to walk the runway in silence the attendees spontaneously applauded and whistled and kept the energy of the moment sizzling.

The buzz over Shawn was dead on. The collection was hot. But more than that, it was both flirtatious and classy. A black and white tuxedo dress was gorgeous and a pink hooded mini dress was surprisingly innocent.

The more unusual pieces in the collection were the trench coats dresses. The dresses were attractive but so coat-like they didn't have the same streamlined flow each of the other Shawn dresses possessed.

Patches and camouflage found there way into the Shawn collection this fall as well. The patches were smart and the militaristic fabric or design of certain outfits seemed timely. A grey camouflage t-shirt dress was fantastic and a black military sweater that was matched with a pink and white-stripped skirt was striking.

The show began like a party and ended as one as well. To the delight of everyone, the last model walking the runway was rumored to be Shawn himself - the one the label was named for. He sported a black and white tuxedo tank top, an army jacket and a pink and black plaid kilt.
