Sonia Rykiel: Fashion’s Favorite Heroine Creates Fashion Symphony
By: Contributing Writer
PARIS, Mar 4, 2005/ FW/ --- Have you been moved by a song in your heart that brings about the best in you? With The Supremes, ‘I Hear A Symphony,’ on the background, the song goes:
You've given me a true love
and every day I thank you love
For a feeling that's so new
So inviting, so exciting
Whenever you're near
I hear a symphony
A tender melody
Pulling me closer
Closer to your arms
Sonia Rykiel’s Fall 2005/Winter 2006 collection created just such a good feeling within the minds and spirits of the attendees.
Little black dresses, shawls, caps, evening dresses hit the runway in a dizzying manner, pulling the audience into a world of poetry and romanticism. With a dash of 30’s and a hint of 40’s all woven into modern forms, every silhouette was nothing less than an eye-catcher.
The French heroine began the show with a little straight coat in black jersey. It was immediately followed by a black knit mohair coat with greatly exaggerated flower-embroidered sleeves and collar that created poetry.
The dresses had balloon sleeves, ball-shaped sleeves and slim sleeves. The coats were body hugging with exaggerated and voluminous details such as the collars, sleeves, wraps, etc.
As the show progressed, a different music of euphoria could be felt.
So powerful was the show that Nicole Brewer, fashion director of the Time Warner publication, ESSENCE Magazine, was literally moved to tears by it all. “Rykiel always has this effect on me”, she said. Jason Campbell of the JC REPORT also concurred.
The silhouettes were all form-fitting, romantic and time transcending. They created the ideal movement and made the ordinary hips of the models into the hips of a goddess.
There were flashes of paillettes or all that glitters woven into the dresses creating the perfect embellishments to the bust lines.
The finale worked the entire audience for filth! Each model filed out as if in procession wearing a new ensemble composed of a tank tops, crew-neck sweaters, sweaters with long, *sickening ball-shaped sleeves, embroidered with matching flowers and form fitting bi-coloured flounced skirts with their won underskirt.
*Sickening: a superlative form of even the highest praises.
