PARIS, Jan 30, 2003/ FW/ -- Falling between Jean-Paul Gaultier and Dior Homme on Monday, the Rykiel Homme show might have easily been compacted into non-existence. But fortunately, that did not happen, and Sonia Rykiel sent out a fine collection full of sparkle for a dreary winter day.
Though no new ground was broken, Ms. Rykiel reworked to perfection what is arguably her
strong point: knitwear.
Sweaters and scarves came solid and striped, painted in a kaleidoscope of color: midnight
blue, forest green, plum, sky blue and even fuchsia.
The show, held in a seedy theatre in Montmartre, found Sonia seated at the end of the runway,
and afterwards, taking the stage on the arms of a model.
Highlights included a black, glazed leather jacket, a burgundy velour suit cut with medium
lapels, and a glorious mink vest.
In a variation on the gray pinstripe suit seen a little too frequently elsewhere on the
runways this season, Ms. Rykiel took the fresh approach of adding peach and mint T-shirts.
The collection was down to earth and highly wearable, both strong points.
And given the current uncertain economic climate, Sonia also signed an iron-clad insurance
policy.
