PARIS, Jul 5, 2002/ FWD/ --- On Sunday, Sonia Rykiel -- as expected -- kept things on the
Left Bank.
She presented clothes for the man who resides (or at least wishes he could reside) not far
from Rykiel’s boutiques in trendy Saint Germain.
That said, the show was not predictable, repetitive or boring, but simply reliable.
Her famous stripes were ever-present in the collection, showing up on suits, swimming trunks,
and of course a few knits in between.
For the stripes this season, she picked light blue, navy blue, soft red, beige and white
from her vast palette.
Pants were cropped just above the ankle so not to hide the inventive pop-art high-tops on
the models’ feet.
As Converse All-Stars are a bit tired, these will make a good alternative.
Her perfectly stitched knits, patterned in bold colors, were loud without being obnoxious.
Others, though, in soft pinks, blues and yellows, displayed elephants and reminded one of
the Babar garb they sported in their younger years.
The swimming trunks were tiny and tight, but wonderfully bright and designed for the
immodest man.
Unless one is perfectly chiseled, though, they should stick to the generously cut knits instead.
At the end of the show, Rykiel, who was sitting in the audience with all of her family, was
invited up on stage by two models in sparkly sheer Bali pants.
It always brings a smile to the face when she is escorted down the runway - even if the
sequined trousers were a bit distracting.
