PARIS, Jul 6, 2005/ FW/ --- In one of the most anticipated shows of this season in Paris, fashion brand Thierry Mugler made a comeback to men’s fashion week after an absence of a season or two and with a new design talent.
American designer Thomas Engelhart had the honour of signing his first Spring/Summer collection for Mugler and presenting it to the buyers and members of the international press. Obviously, he would have big shoes fill.
Engelhart brought together in unison white jeans, cotton tops, leather pants signalling that a new day has come for the house. This is evidence by the banded collar blazers that actually more like traditional Chinese wear than those previously incarnating the undeniable Mugler spirit.
Only a few Mugler codes are easily visible to the eye. Among them are the stars printed into the fabrics of Engelhart’s ties. However, this collection will not leave tradition Mugler fans star struck.
Engelhart’s collection took many by surprise as it guided the Mugler house into a completely new direction. A dangerous thing to do in today’s sometimes tumultuous and uncertain fashion times.
The collection is for true hard rockers such as those who follow groups like Guns & Roses and want to emulate the bands look. These types of buyers will be more than thrilled as they are certain to find what they are seeking here.
Unfortunately, Engelhart went too far away from the spirit of what Mugler represents in the eyes of the public.
That is not to say that it was not a good collection. It simply means that if this is the new look of Mugler, it’s going to take a while to take off as the image of the men’s line created by Thierry Mugler himself, is so strong and powerful that many may be afraid to see the collection for its real value.
