SYDNEY, May 10, 2003/ FW/ --- In a summer when the must-see movies are The Matrix: Reloaded and XMen2, the sci-fi genre is at its height.

And though Tina Kalivas did not make any reference to these two movies, the sci-fi feel of her collection made her right on target for the trends to come when these two movies hit the theaters in the U.S.

Tina Kalivas who is known for putting historical references in her designs went forward and backward in time to give her audience of what 'chic' will look like in our future.

Of course, some says that our future is now, with the sci-fi movies teaching us what is hot in terms of clothes and accessories.

With the black body-hugging mini dress adorned with a yellow applique shaped like a knight's emblem and accessorized with a yellow veil extending to look like a wing, the designer fused the medieval ladies with Padme Amidalah of Star Wars and the Orion slave girls of Star Trek.

Whew! That was a long one.

Sounds like a paradox... and yet, that is the charm and strength of Tina Kalivas' design.

Taking something from our past, and then mixing it with elements in our contemporary culture, she comes out with edgy clothing that is both familiar yet new.

It will not be a surprise if she gives Catherine Martin a run for her money if Tina Kalivas ever decide to go to Hollywood and try her hand in costume designing.
