DALLAS, Dec 11, 2005/ FW/ --- One of the benefits of being a writer is to be able to work at home when your presence is not actually needed at the office. And, it was during one of those days working at home that my little Welsh corgi met ‘Mr. Brown’, the UPS delivery guy bringing a package addressed to my dog, containing her monthly Heartgard. Little did I know that the chance meeting would mean something later.
I met the same UPS guy at work sometime after that, this time with a package addressed to me, sent by Tomer containing a winter scarf. When he handed me the package, he said, “Oh, the lady with the friendly dog. It’s nice to see you again.”
I raised my eyebrows, thinking ‘how did he know I own a dog,’ and then it dawned on me that he was the same guy who delivers in my home address.
“Yes, she is,” I answered while I signed for the package. Then as he was leaving, he said, “Give (mentioning the name of my dog) a pat on the head for me.”
I nodded, smiling the way most dog owners do when someone admires their pet. Yet, it was more than that. It was the personal service of Mr. Brown that I was thinking that time. And his memory of his ‘clients,’ even though the “client” is hairy, has four feet and weighs 25 pounds.
So, in a phone conversation with Tomer, when I was thanking him for the scarf, I mentioned the good service I received from UPS.
“Oh, UPS is a great company to work with,” Tomer said. “I send out about 5-6 packages every week and they always deliver on time.”
Talking about UPS with Tomer is very logical. Last September, he was one of the 10 emerging designers featured at the UPS Hub, a runway specifically created by the shipping company and 7th on Sixth to highlight young designers.
“It was really a great opportunity that UPS gave all 10 of us,” Tomer related how his life has been since September.
“When you are an emerging designer, it is very hard to get noticed by people. Since I was featured by UPS, all of a sudden, I have been getting phone calls.”
