PHILADELPHIA, Dec 15, 2010 / — The first exhibition in Philadelphia of Miami-based sculptor France Trombly, “Everything and Nothing” exhibition is a twist on Duchamp’s notion of the readymade.
Frances Trombly’s sculptures are meticulous recreations of mundane objects that would normally escape attention. Close attention to the minutiae of their own making, reveals that her works are laboriously hand woven, embroidered, cross stitched, or crocheted positioning them in the field of crafts traditionally associated with women’s work.
By choosing innocuous objects and displaying them to initially deceive, Trombly provokes to the viewer to assess the “value” of objects in an environment where value lives, where value thrives – the gallery or museum.
This contrast evokes questions about labor, value, history, feminism, class, and the American way of life. Her obsessive meditations on the ordinary reverses the conventional hierarchy of value associated with the original, instilling a mass-produced object with an authority that is missing from the utilitarian original.

Frances Trombly was born in Miami, Florida, where she lives and works. She received a BFA from the Maryland Institute of Art and has exhibited in major cities nationally including New York, Miami, and Los Angeles and internationally in London, Vienna, as well as Latin America.
A year-long installation of her work recently opened at Girls Club in Ft. Lauderdale, a space founded by Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz focused on contemporary women artists. Her work has also been featured in various publications including Sculpture Magazine, Modern Painters and Art & Auction.
