Shannon Galati and Ya-Ling Hou Shannon Galati and Ya-Ling Hou DALLAS, May 18, 2007/ FW/ --- Collaborating on one collection, Shannon Galati and Ya-Ling Hou came up with futuristic looks reminiscent of Paco Rabanne’s silhouettes.

Ya-Ling Hou, BFA Textile Design created textiles inspired by OP ART painter Bridget Riley. Graphical forms and shapes were used in the print giving it the futuristic feel without using high-tech materials like aluminum or plexi-glass.

And because of Ya-Ling Hou’s vision of the fabric, the spirit of the collection might be Paco Rabanne’s, but the execution is original.

Shannon Galati, BFA Fashion Design did more than justice to Ya-Ling Hou’s fabric designs. Choosing the 1960s as her basis, she exaggerated the shapes and forms, and then reworked the silhouettes to make it her own.

Pointed shoulders looked padded from afar, but the shape was actually achieved by superimposing a ‘cape’ that was sewn on the empire bodice. Care was taken so that the prints ‘matched’ where they were cut, hence unless you look closely, you would think that it is one piece.

Very structured shapes that look almost queenly; if George Lucas ever decides to do another Star Wars trilogy, Shannon Galati is a shoo in as costume designer.

Galati and Hou complemented each other’s works, making them a natural team. But as it turns out, both of them have plans of their own.

Shannon Galati, a 2006 Fashion Group Foundation Scholarship Award winner is going to Paris to study at Studio Bercot for a year, as part of her prize in winning the Sister City Scholarship Exchange Program. She has also been offered a job with Abercrombie & Fitch.

Like Galati, Ya-Ling Hou is also a design competition winner. She is the 2007 Grand Prize winner for the SURTEX 2007 International Student Design Competition.
