Abaete Spring 2008: Affordable High Street Fashion
New York Fashion Week Spring 2008
By Mari Davis
NEW YORK, Sep 5, 2007/ FW/ – Retro 1940s, inspired by Gene Tierney, Laura Poretzky designing under her own label Abaete proposed looks that are sexily innocent and could fit different body types.
With the controversy on skinny models and accusations to the fashion industry that it promotes ‘thin’ looks, Poretzky proved that with skillful cutting and tailoring, a design can be translated to fit a wide spectrum of women from tall or short, thin or plus size, willowy or full figure.
Poretzky who also designs for Payless under the label ‘Abaete for Payless,’ also proposed six new shoe styles and two handbags that will be sold exclusively at Payless stores across the U.S. when Spring 2008 rolls around. With names like Tierney, Harlow, Hayworth, Grace, Kelly and Rita, all 8 new pieces were keeping within Abaete’s theme of mining the 1940s for inspiration.
Presenting a total of 31 exits, Abaete ran the gamut of daywear, eveningwear and swimwear that played on the mystique and allure of the 1940s and early 1950s screen sirens like Gene Tierney, Rita Hayworth and the ever elegant and fashion icon Princess Grace of Monaco, known to many as Grace Kelly before she married Prince Rainier.
A well-edited and directional collection, it has only one flaw… i.e., we have to six months before we can get a hold of them and make them part of our wardrobes.
