LOS ANGELES, Mar 24, 2006/ FW/ --- To paraphrase Shakespeare, ‘All catwalks are a stage and models are mere players,’ Chulo Pony designers Chris Kopeck and Crystal Heald were inspired by ‘The Lost Letter,’ the story of twin sisters who were separated because of a love triangle.
Kopeck & Heald turned their runway show into a tableau, with a beginning, middle and ending, a story of familial love, broken heart, immigration, separation and isolation that spans about 75 years, inspiring the design duo to create a collection that fused 1930s silhouettes with 21st century aesthetics.
Opening with two models that are supposed to represent the pair of twins in the ‘Lost Letter,’ Chulo Pony sent Eastern European inspired pieces because the original set of twins was supposed to be from Prague.
Wide legged trousers came as with high waist or low rise with lengths varying from Capri to pageboy to normal. Romance was added by the use of ruffles on hemlines and blouse plackets. To get an opulent feel, faux fur was used as collar on selected sweaters and jackets.
Pencil skirts with kick pleats and sweater dresses together with printed frocks with hemlines that reach above the knee composed the daywear.
Jackets with snug fitting that either came in plaid or solid color, while outer coats were cut long, reaching the ankle and closed with chrome rivets.
Already on its 8th season, Chulo Pony is a freshman on the Los Angeles runways. Their choice to show in L.A., though their hometown Vancouver, BC hold their own fashion week is a sure sign that the City of Angels is attracting serious designers who want to expand their market base.
