Ready-To-Wear Group Show Ready-To-Wear Group Show SYDNEY, May 6, 2005/ FW/ --- Three emerging labels – Caravana, Ed and Bek, Hansel – took center stage Wednesday afternoon at Mercedes Australian Fashion Week with modern and avant-garde looks.

Designers Cathy Braid & Kirsten Ainsworth for CARAVANA worked with Pakistani artisans to bring “decadent hand dyed and hand loomed textiles together with intricate embellishments” in modern silhouettes.

A collection of tops and bottoms in the bright colors of spring, the design duo successfully created looks that the modern woman will go for.

Though the collection was beautiful, it was a tad repetitive with the off-the-shoulder raglan sleeves and boat necks paired with low-waist bias skirts that sometimes came with asymmetrical hemlines.

Central St. Martin’s grad and winner of the 2004 Moet & Chandon Fresh Designer Award in Singapore, Jo Soh who named her label HANSEL after her beloved Jack Russell terrier took a very modern and minimalistic approach for her collection.

Embellishments were nominal, coming only as little piping on the sides or hems. The Singapore-based designer relied on cut and mastery of tailoring techniques for her fresh and appealing graphical and color-blocks silhouettes.

Sydney-based Edwina Lye & Rebekah Golsby-Smith designing under their eponymous label ED and BEK was all about ‘looking like a doll.’

With all the models wearing wigs in Shirley Temple tresses, there was innocence attached to the 1950s look of voluminous skirts and harem-inspired pants.

The collection is perfect for the very individualistic style of dressing of the young generation and the avant-garde fashion of the Japanese market.
