James Coviello DALLAS, Aug 11, 2006 / FW / --- James Coviello began his career in fashion in 1987, as a jewelry designer for Erickson Beamon. During the same time period, he also started designing hats, which was immediately picked up by Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus.

It is his hat collection that eventually brought James Coviello on the catwalk as he collaborated with Oscar de la Renta, Geoffrey Beene, Calvin Klein, and Todd Oldham, creating hats for their runway shows.

But it was Anna Sui who would eventually showcase Coviello’s talent in making knitwear to the fashion set. After a successful collaboration in 1991 wherein Coviello created a special hat for Anna Sui for a photo shoot wherein Sui was styling, the two designers collaborated again during Sui’s first runway show.

Coviello created hats and knitwear for Anna Sui; the next season, Sui created the ‘James Coviello for Anna Sui’ label. This alliance between Sui and Coviello still thrives up to today.

With already established clientele for his accessories and knitwear, James Coviello decided to establish his eponymous ready-to-wear line in 2000, with his solo debut on the New York catwalk during the Spring 2001 season.

He took inspiration from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, and translated them into retro-modern silhouettes with romantic touches such as flowers and bows.

Like his hat collection, that was a commercial success since the first season, Fred Segal and Barneys immediately picked up Coviello’s ready-to-wear label from the beginning. Today, the label sells in over 40 specialty boutiques and department stores throughout the world.

The label is also sold online at www.saks.com and on the Spiegel Big Book Catalog, which includes knitwear and home furnishings.
