Kim Jones: Another Point for Androgyny

PARIS, Jul 10, 2004/ FW/ --- Clean-cut lads wearing different shades of white dominated Kim Jones’ stark white runway decorated only with green laser lights and crystal ball. Going for an almost futuristic look that is firmly rooted for today, the British designer scored another point for androgyny.
Opening with a bare-chested male model wearing only a pair of white shorts with a gym bag slung at his back, Kim Jones set the sportswear theme for the collection.
Drawstring pants, all white suits, long sleeved sweats with cowl necklines, anoraks and windbreakers --- everything and anything an active youth needs for his wardrobe is represented in the collection.
Not forgetting that it is springtime, Kim Jones also threw in bright blues, reds and oranges, breaking the austere whites. Prints were Native American inspired, seen on mostly on jackets or decorative elements.
The fresh take is on the short-cropped jacket, which is navel baring mind you! Though it looks good on the runway, especially with the slanted pockets emphasized with a color block, it’s hard to imagine a twenty-something wearing it, except for those who are very avant-garde.
His most provocative work is on the hip hugging pants with the fly done in a different color and attached to the belt line with a button. Very creative, but it raises one question – how does one go to the men’s room?
Also, what does the tiny circular mirrors mean? Is it the new tattoo? Is it the new mark for the urban male? It was great in reflecting the green laser lights though. Maybe that’s what it was, part of the styling and part of the show.
