Masaki Matsushima: Sportive Elegance
By Michelle Taylor
PARIS, Feb 2, 2005/ FW/ – An officer and a gentleman reminiscent of looks akin to yachting enthusiasts of the 1970’s, sailing the Mediterranean even in winter, just to have dinner with Ralph Lauren at Porto Cervo.
White straight legged trousers worn with classical gold buttoned blue blazers, accessorized with two tone shoes, driving gloves and walking sticks opened the Matsushima collection for autumn winter 2005/06.
Sportive elegance runs throughout this classical, yet contemporary wardrobe, whether it be sailing, equestrian or long walks consumed in the twig light hours in the countryside. Slim, fitted silhouettes come from detailed tailoring that gives importance to trousers that often taper at the ankles and jackets that enhance masculine shoulders and torso.
Proper and serious Matsushima allows for the unexpected, by adding zips to pockets that expand on a whim, caplet rain trenches that would send shivers down Sherlock Holmes’ spine and mixed velvet and leather baggy crutch jodhpurs for stylish comfort, while even allowing for army greens.
The Matsushima man boarders on being a tenderhearted bow tie nerd. Moving between a palette of chocolate, camel, navy blues, ecru and white with a hint of red for a flash of light and good luck.
The collection was androgynous avant-garde. With this collection, Masaki Matsushima more than pleased his fans and will definitely continue his cult following.
