Romain Kremer Menswear Spring 2007: High On Imagination

Romain Kremer PARIS, Jul 1, 2006/ FW/ --- In a collection high on imagination Roman Kremer today invited us to imagine a wardrobe constructed not for going to the shops, not even for dressing for a party but one rather adapted for reaching for the stars. It couldn’t really be said that this was boldly going where no man has been before but I doubt that we’ll see anything else quite like it this season.

The first exit, realized in gold lamé with a sort of giant tubed décolleté armature, set the tone. With its cushioned side panels it was unclear if the look took its inspiration from extra-terrestrial club wear or android design but the effect was certainly not of this world. The inter-galactic trend continued with cotton trousers adorned with prints of a starry sky and webbed seams suggesting a skirt section.

Not content to straddle universes in a geographical sense, the collection also fiddled with the space-time continuum by mixing-up futuristic musings with pieces that seemed to borrow from medieval peasant attire.

Imagine a blue tunic cut to the waist, the flared sleeves and large black caped shoulders lending the piece an air that was equal parts wandering minstrel and Startrek bit part. Other pieces drew on this influence and at times veered in a direction that put one in mind of the New Romantics: a smock like white shirt for example with an exuberant ruffle that ran up the back of the sleeves and along the shoulders.

In the midst of all this fantasy however were items that seemed designed more to appeal to the bank manager than a fertile imagination. Hooded tops with large ringed button details required no special courage to wear and a white short and jacket combination in linen could have come directly from a commercially minded Milanese runway.
