Varma is also one of the founding members of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). A graduate of the London School of Fashion (1986), Varma honed his skills under Nicole Farhi and Yves Saint Laurent before returning to India to start his eponymous line. In less than two-decades, Suneet Varma became a household name in India and today his company Suneet Varma Designs Pvt Ltd operates three freestanding stores - 2 in New Delhi and 1 in Bombay. As a fashion designer, Suneet Varma has dressed socialites and stars, styling everyone from Aishwarya Rai on the cover of Vogue India to Cindy Crawford for Omega. As a costume designer, he has a long list of filmography that includes award-winning movie 'Monsoon Wedding.' Currently, Varma has just signed a three-movie project with Tips, the blockbuster Bollywood production house; the first movie will feature Bipasha Basu. From Bollywood to Hollywood, Varma's next project will be Goldie Hawn's new movie "Ashes To Ashes". Suneet is also currently working with Swarovski on their wedding book for this year! This wedding book will wedding dresses from 20 top designers, including Jean Paul Gaultier. Speaking of weddings, Suneet Varma has dressed the wedding party for the $60 million Versailles nuptials of Vanisha Mittal, daughter of steel tycoon Lakshmi Mitta. He has designed for over 70 weddings, the most recent for the son of shipping magnate Lal L. Chellaram, Vikram. And though this happens a lot in the fashion industry, Suneet Varma is also one of the fashion designers who have also crossed over to celebrity status. Named Designer of the Year for 2006 by MTV India, Suneet Varma was also the brand ambassador in India for Moet Chandon from 2000 to 2005; he is also the current face of BMW India. |
