"There is a definite return to the use of mannequins in stores" comments
David Naranao, Creative Director at Greneker Mannequins, the California
based company established sixty five years ago.
"But the trend is towards more abstract than realistic mannequins," he adds.
"We see more and more of sculpted heads and abstract mannequins.
And it’s not necessary a full mannequin either. We more forms in stores nowadays."
Greneker Mannequins, now owned by Berkeley International,
have in the past been famous for producing mannequins holding wildly
creative poses. "Today our forms are much more streamline," says Naranao.
"We do a huge combination of young and sporty and a variety of tasteful and
sleek" he says describing the range. "The outlets that our product vary from
Siemans to Macys West and Macys East and include specialty stores like Fubu
that sell trendy young street clothes."
Currently, Naranao and his team at Greneker are working on two
collections. A very abstract line called CANVAS that is basic with no
detail on the face.
"The idea is that each client can have exactly what they
ask for. The idea of a blank canvas being tailored to each client is the
theme. Some want just painted hair, or painted eyes and a pair of lips.
Others request completely blank forms and the forms thus take on many
different looks."
The second new collection is called MARIE, an idea based on
a painted portrait from the 1800’s of a woman who looked very
serene and a little abstract. The Marie line is very sophisticated, a
mature woman with a full figure.
Greneker also offers TWEENS, a mannequin line that depicts early teens ages 12-15.
" We built a whole
line around them and it was very successful. Teens with their music and
fashion had lots to spend. Let’s just say that Britney Spears and N’Synch
have a lot to answer for!" says Naranao.
