Jan 15, 2000 / FW/ --- Working with mannequins is an adventure. Here are a few real life stories
about mannequins which you might enjoy.
At the DFS Galleria Store in Guam, the children mannequin are on a ledge. Built like an H,
the ledge marks the Children Department. (That part of the store has 20-foot ceiling).
To change the mannequins, the Visual Merchandisers have to climb up there.
One day, while
Sheiglagh was changing the kid mannequins, she heard a gasp from a Japanese tourist, and
Sheiglagh found herself being stared at by a whole tour group. Later, a Japanese translator
told her that she gave a woman a scare of her life because the woman thought that a mannequin
has come to life.
Sometimes, mannequins can distract people from the most unexpected places. This story happened
in Honolulu, Hawaii.
While cleaning up the VM Warehouse, the Director found that one mannequin was so badly off
(one missing arm, nose broken off) that refurbishing it was not worth it. So, it was decided
that it has to go to the dumpster. As it turned out, one of the legs of the mannequin
was sticking out. When the garbage man arrived, it gave him a scare that he went inside
the VM shop and asked if someone was missing.
Store owners sometimes get "attached" to their mannequins.
Alice Seifullah is the proprietor of a vintage clothing store in Cleveland, Ohio. She started
her mannequin collection because of her business. From her own words, "I have adopted my
mannequins. One of them I have to build from parts of different mannequins. That is what you
call personality. And they do have personalities. Each of my mannequins in my store is
an individual."
At times, taking care of a mannequin is an act of fate.
Jim Rhine, became Leia's Papa by accident. There was a going out of business sale in the
area where he worked. He passed by and saw a smiling mannequin. He could not help himself but
save her from the dumpster. Quote from Jim, "She tells me what she wants to wear! It sounds
nuts, but I change Leia's clothes once a week. And everytime, there is a little voice in
my head telling me exactly what I should put on her."
