Nov 9, 1999/ FW/ --- The 1950s were a time of fairy tales. In 1955 Disneyland opened its doors to the Magic Kingdom.

Mannequins reflected that intrigue with faces that look slightly cartoon-like faces. Heinrich Obermaier produced a whole series of adult cartoon types with exaggerated expression.

Contrary to this portrayal were extremely sophisticated and untouchable creatures styled after the flesh and blood of fashion models of the time.

One glamorous mannequin by Obermaier was of this caliber. She evoked an unapproachable sensuality with her “bedroom eyes.”

Mary Brosnan's lounging Sleeping Beauty (top photo) of the '50s was an exception to the plastic doll look that dominated the decade.

Brosnan's beauty emoted a luxurious sensuousness, quite the antithesis of many of the mannequins then who could truly be labeled dummies.
