DALLAS, May 8, 2004/ FW/ --- UPS is not a stranger to high fashion having sponsored high profile runway shows in Bryant Park such as the B Michael Fall 2004 (see photo left) catwalk presentation last February. On Tuesday, the company is raising the ante with the sponsorship of a design contest at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
The catwalk show will feature the designs of six semi-finalists in a competition to create a mock UPS uniform for every region of the world the shipping company serves. Entry designs ran the gamut from a kimono-inspired jacket to a safari-style jumpsuit.
Although the winning outfit won’t become an official UPS uniform, its designer will gain exposure to high-profile fashion industry experts who are judging the contest. The winner, to be announced at an event immediately following the show, will be awarded a $1,000 cash prize from UPS.
FIT student Demeatris Davis, who designed a striking blue and chocolate brown suit for North America, said his design reflects the modern role of women in American society.
“In our ever-changing society where traditionally male-dominated professions are now being taken up by women, the new UPS woman does just as good of a job as her male counterpart; she’s just dressed better,” Davis said.
The young designers who will be featured are:
Bianca Moreno's entry used elements from Japanese culture infused with modern day street wear using contrasting materials like cashmere and leather. A Mexican American and native of San Antonio, Texas, Moreno is in her third year of study at FIT and has worked with designers such as As Four, Duckie Brown and Lucy Barnes.
Demeatris Davis is native to Queens, New York, and is the only male designer in the competition. Davis designed a striking blue and chocolate brown suit for the North American region and says his design reflects the modern role of women in American society. Says Davis, "In our ever changing society where traditionally male dominated professions are now being taken up by women, the new UPS woman does just as good of a job as her male counterpart...she's just dressed better."
Kyunghee Min's design reflects the Latin American region. An asymmetrical vest top and balloon shaped pants define this uniform to create an image of Carnival-like fun and great service. A native Korean, Min has benefited from internships at Daryl K. and Nautica Apparel Inc. in New York.
Sofia Enlund is influenced by the Scandinavian simplicity having grown up in Almhult, Sweden. For the competition, Enlund designed her uniform with the African terrain in mind. Complete with chic legwarmers to protect from high grass and a high collar to shield from sandy air, her uniform design is sleek and practical.
Noriko Kikuchi mixed ancient cultural traditions like The Zen of Asia and the Japanese kimono with Asian pop culture like the Chinese movie-HERO for her UPS uniform. Originally from China, Kikuchi has studied in Florence and now interns for Michael Kors while attending classes at FIT.
Renata Radomski says FIT has taught her to think big and that the sky is the limit. Her Euro-style uniform entry boasts professional craftsmanship including a hood and a heat imprint of "what can brown do for you" on a hanging pocket. Radomski is native to Krakow, Poland.
UPS’s sponsorship of the FIT fashion show is the latest in the company’s ongoing collaborations with the fashion industry.
“We are working with FIT to support designers of the future and to illustrate how UPS is the perfect fit for the fashion industry’s global business needs,” said Kurt Kuehn, UPS senior vice president, worldwide sales and marketing.
“From logistics to trade finance, UPS helps fashion businesses manage the complexities of international shipping so they can focus on what they do best – creating fashion for consumers around the world.”
