Vivienne Westwood Comes to Town For Nine West
By: Randal Jacobs

NEW YORK, Jun 4, 2006/ FW/ --- On a random Wednesday night Dame Vivienne Westwood graced us with her presence on the streets of Manhattan. Westwood along with Thakoon and Sophia Kokosalaki has teamed up with Nine West to create a small collection of great pieces for the high street label.

Last May 31, as New York club socialites, trannies and drag queens sat down for the Nine West catwalk presentation, the show had already begun as Amanda Lepore sauntered through.

Thakoon opened the show with black boucle full short mini skirts with chunky cream sweaters. As a former editor of Harper's Bazaar, Thakoon knows how to woo his audience with detailing and trims. The mostly black collection was sensible and wearable with skinny pants and awesome knit pullovers. His play with pleats on minis is reminiscent of Quant.

Accessories were in full force with black beret hats and of course, shoes. Round toe pumps with thick heels were sensational with ruffle detailing around the edges. The black lace wedge and the open toe Coquetdemi pump were notable as well.

The New Yorker boot is his signature for the collection with full suede sheen cover and round toed. His collection ended with a crimson selection in silk rap dresses and blouses. This capsule balanced the heavy use of darker hues. The short tan classic peacoat teamed with tights will be two great basics for the Nine West girl.

Sophia Kokosalaki brought another energy unto the runway full with embellishments and stern silhouettes. This Grecian born designer gained inspiration from her roots and mixed it with her modern life in the U.K. Bustle backs and back pleated jackets were restricting but fun. Kokosalaki capes and pencil skirts were her stronghold.

This collection was heavily stylized fitting for the savvy Brit woman. Suede flats and strappy front pumps were shown. Leather gloves along with the camera shaped day bag were at the forefront of her accessory line.

The gold lame section for night was where Kokosalaki showed her craftsmanship with double hems and pleats. Chiffons were layered and the lame crepes fell perfectly on each model.

Lady Westwood was the highlight of the night and rightfully the last designer to present. She really broke it up with her new-age punk music and vibe... With a movement that she is credited to have brought to the runway, she has redefined punk again and is bringing it to another generation and consumer.

With Westwood, it is not all about the clothes, but often it is about the affect in which she is giving. Like with many of her collections, she gave us straps, bustiers and plaids. The mini skirt/lady kilt is a definite look next season not only for girls, but also for boys with shorter hemlines and in non-traditional fabrics.

The Westwood woman will also be styled in caplet shirts, linen kaftans and wide leg pants. The evening looks were amazing and they were true to the Westwood aesthetic with unlimited fabric usage in Elizabethan silhouettes.

The Westwood man will look just as hot as her women. The short kilts were just a starter. The brown lace kilt is taking this ceremonial piece of clothing to the next level of high street fashion.

Double breasted cardigans and a crystal knit hoodie and leggings were everything. The high waist tuxedo trousers in a baggy silhouette made quite a statement.

Westwood brought the collection home with her accessories. The new gladiator boot with tan straps and plaid fabrics are amazing. Her signature plaid print is plastered on the inside soles of every shoe with detailed bows and straps alike. Her handbags are truly hardware in heavy leather alongside her wrestling belt, which should be the finished piece for every look.

Nine West is seriously setting the standard of bringing style to the masses. The opportunity for so many American women to have access to great collections at affordable prices will be great. Sophia Kokosalaki states that Nine West also respects the design process and tries to remain true to the vision of designers.

This was totally seen throughout the show and will make these collections fly off the shelves when they enter into the stores this fall.
