DALLAS, Mar 31, 2008 / FW/ — In what is arguably his best collection for Lacoste yet, Christophe Lemaire refined the brand’s DNA by adding romantic elements to sportswear, thus softening the hard edges that comes with that clothing genre.

One of the greatest challenges of a designer when he or she is at the creative helm of a very old brand is that there is always a need a to reinvent and refresh the label. Lemaire, who had been at the Artistic Director for Lacoste for several years now has successfully distilled Lacoste into a young and hip, highly covetable label while keeping its sportive roots. Lemaire’s Fall 2008 exemplifies what the French designer had done for the brand.

DALLAS, Mar 29, 2008 / FW/ — Unveiled during the recently concluded Wills India Fashion Week, Suneet Varma mined the colonization history of Southeast Asia, mixing eastern costumes with Anglo-Franco dressing from the said era, then reworked it to fit today’s aesthetics.

Suneet Varma

To the western world, specifically Europe, Oriental costumes are considered ‘exotic.’ But to Asians, and in this case Burma, Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, China and Nepal, which were the countries that inspired Suneet Varma, these ‘exotic’ costumes are their daily wear.

And though for some strange reasons, the western world has a tendency to forget that the Orient and its people has a well developed sense of color and style long before they arrive. Also, though politically the Southeast Asian countries were the ones colonized, the exchange of culture was two ways, i.e., the Europeans were also influenced.

At least a century had passed since the ‘colonial times’ and today’s global village actually encourages melting pots, hence a fashion collection that features padded jackets, Anglo-French tailcoats, British tweed waistcoats, riding breeches, applets and cavalry-inspired silhouettes, that features strong Asian cultural influences.

Soft, drapey dresses with structured sleeves worn with masculine ties, wide necked jackets with matching belts and sarong skirts, short cropped cavalry jackets with long evening dresses and the colour palette of gold leaf green, deep maroon, teal, black and white look very natural together.

Christian LacroixPARIS, Mar 28, 2008 / FW/ — Christian Lacroix’s Fall 2008 collection might have demonstrated a toned-down exuberance for Arles as the couturier used more solids and color blocks instead of the lively floral prints, but the Paris-based designer has not forgotten his birthplace.

This summer, Christian Lacroix is the curator of the annual Arles photo show, where approximately 55,000 visitors attend yearly. Slated from Jul 8 to Sep 14, 2008, the event is properly known as “Rencontres de Photographie d’Arles”.

For this year’s event, Christian Lacroix will not only be involved behind the scenes; he will also exhibit some of his own Polaroid photos that he shot himself. Unknown to many, shooting with Polaroids is also an art form, as many professional photographers have experimented with the medium and turned it as artistic as it could be.

The couturier, who turns 56 this year, is not showing any signs of slowing down. His Fall 2008 collection, unveiled last February here in Paris might be toned-down in terms of print while its high energy comes from the designer’s allusion to his haute couture identity.

His monochrome cocktail dresses, the ‘bouillonés’ and the “choux” that feature elaborate draping and folding of fabric to evoke three-dimensional flowers exemplify the Lacroix’s enthusiasm in creating highly desirable and highly covetable silhouettes.

A bouquet of pure flowers including Arabian Jasmine, Ylang-Ylang, Lily of the Valley and White Iris blooms in the middle notes. The heady base notes feature an accord of vanilla absolute, fresh musk and amber.

The LE MALE 4.2 oz Stimulating Body Spray ($56.00 USD) is enriched with mint, ginseng and ginger water. Refreshing agents create an icy effect - a cocktail of pure energy.
