NEW YORK, Feb 2, 2008 / FW/ — It’s been a while since I’ve seen Perry Ellis and all I can say is Wow! What a difference a new artistic director makes. If Patrick Robinson (that was the last time I’ve seen Perry Ellis and the reason why I quit attending the label’s shows) made me fall asleep, the current Artistic Director makes me feel hopeful about menswear.
An urban lumberjack wearing cable knit sweaters, leather blousons and bomber jackets, quilted vests and double-breasted trenches, the Perry Ellis man is no longer is your average Joe. He’s hip and fashion forward.
Alright, it is true that this collection if far from being edgy and avant-garde. But compared to the Middle America and boring silhouettes that Patrick Robinson used to give us, this collection is almost underground, ever subversive.
Of course it’s a far cry from Brooklyn’s industrial look and a hip-hop aficionado will not be caught dead wearing it. But, you have to give Perry Ellis the credit of ‘growing younger with its clientele’.
The original Perry Ellis fans are now in their late 50s or early 60s and chances are Perry Ellis still makes clothes that they will wear. They are, after all, the brand’s original clienteles. Growing old with your fans is an admirable act by Perry Ellis. Still, for the brand to survive, a fan base must be constantly renewed. And, this new direction by the label is doing exactly that.

Other things to look forward to in this collection are the messenger bags and totes, the big & warm scarves and the rubber boots.
