NEW YORK, Feb 5, 2008 / FW/ — It was like a trip to the North Pole, entering a giant igloo. At first you arrive at what appears to be a very industrial Pier 40, then you walk up a football field with kids and adults playing soccer. Another turn, and you arrive to a dark parking area, at which stage you feel like you’re on a plane touching down as you follow the green light trails.
As you check in for your seating assignments, you immediately walk in a wall of ice blocks that stretches down the path of the runway. The 70-meter long glacial backdrop reaches from floor to ceiling, creating a perfect glacial experience inside. Opposite the ice walls are the seats with neatly rolled Y-3 towels. The seating alone was spectacular.
As like every Y-3 show, Yohji Yamamoto treats his audience to a total experience. For Fall 2008, Y-3 celebrates the human innocence and technology, the collection showcasing a mixture of technical fabrics on very basic garments, as well as technical pieces in very natural and basic fabrics.
Classic Y-3 silhouettes, active wear for today’s jet set done in the shades of black, gray, army green and some amazing plaid. Shoes, bags and eyewear complete the whole style. It is nice to see plaid in this collection, which was used in almost everything from coats and trenches to trousers, even ladies’ suit dresses.

Giant wraps for women and puffy lumberjack jackets for men. Must have items are the ladies boots and the long chain-strap totes. The branding was very strong with the white lines on trousers, skirts and bags, plus the screen printed/embroidered Y-3 on skirts, jackets and also on pants.
And though season after season Y-3 has always mesmerized its audience from the first ever Stargate with moving runways, this one is the best show staged so far. And if I may add, the best in the season!
The only drawback to this collection is that we have to wait for six months before it hits the stores. Speaking of stores, this fashion week also marks the launch of the first Y-3 flagship store in New York, located at 317 West 13th Street in the Meat Packing District of Manhattan, opposite the new Yohji Yamamoto boutique, opening simultaneously on Tuesday, February 5th.
The Y-3 store has been designed to follow the brand’s global signature retail concept, characterized by a contemporary white, black and orange minimalist style. In March, Y-3 will open a second New York City location in Soho.
Now, for those who like watching the front row, celebrities who attended the runway show included: Ellen Pompeo, Vincent Gallo, Helena Christensen, Justin Theroux, Damon Dash, Ioan Gruffuld, The Misshapes, Miranda Kerr, Tom Sachs, Aaron Young, Terence Koh, Klaus Biesenbach, Genevieve Jones, Arden Wohl, Mark Gonzalez, Craig McDean, Stella Schnabel, Tallulah Harlech, Simon Hammerstein, Drena DeNiro and Choi Kang Hee.
