MILAN, Feb 18, 2008 / FW/ — Remember Melanie Griffith and Sigourney Weaver in the 1980s movie ‘Working Girl’? They’re back in Frankie Morello’s vision for Fall 2008 wherein the pop icons of that decade were exaggerated and amplified, put in a time machine to go forward 20 years to become ‘Cashmere Mafia.’
If ‘Working Girl’ exemplified the avarice of the 1980s, the new NBC series ‘Cashmere Mafia’ about four Manhattan women in the thick of New York’s business arena, provides the ironic situation women today are in. They might have everything in terms of career and money, but lose your boyfriend or get a divorce and all of a sudden, everything you’ve worked for is gone.
Though Morello’s point of view is not as philosophical as that, the ironic provocation of the female figure with the layered skirts, fur coats and pill box hats with the more serious dress suits and coatdresses emphasizes the inconsistency and fragility of the woman’s psyche when it comes to her place in society.
In the U.S., Hillary Clinton is running for President, women are CEOs, even have their own reality show about ‘Life in the Fab Lane’, but true equality of the sexes has never been achieved.
In terms of success, women want to be judged the same way as men; yet that utopia has never been reached. Again, Morello’s collection is nowhere near the philosophical implication of the preceding statement, yet his eccentric exaggerations like fur on patent leather, or exploiting the effect of a degradé deep red against mink, can easily be a metaphor of women in the 21st century.
