Gianfranco FerreMILAN, Feb 19, 2008 / FW/ — During fashion week, rumors always abound and one of the most repeated since Milano Moda Donna started was the ‘imminent arrival of a new Creative Director at Gianfranco Ferré.’ Yesterday, the company issued a very short press release quashing that rumor and saying, “the company has at present no negotiations underway regarding the hiring of any new in-house figure.”

Ever since Lars Nilsson left Gianfranco Ferré S.p.A before he even presented his first women’s ready-to-wear collection, the fashion crowd had been speculating on what was the reason for Nilsson’s sudden departure. The Milanese maison’s silence on the subject makes it very mysterious and the more people get interested.

Gianfranco Ferré’s silence on the subject is a class act. The company refuses to be drawn into rumors and gossips. The maison’s focus is on the brand and continuing the legacy of Gianfranco Ferré as already seen with the establishment of a fashion and art foundation in honor of the maison’s founder.

In the middle of these, which in truth, should be front and center, is Gianfranco Ferré’s Fall 2008 / Winter 2009 collection that was unveiled yesterday. With travel as the underlying theme, the atelier sent out capes, jackets and pantsuits that are meant to ‘travel well’ in a jetset world.

Cocktail dresses and floor length frocks were also proposed. After all, aren’t parties one of the reasons why jetsetters travel to different parts of the globe?

Yet, even with the obvious references to ‘real traveling’, the atelier also did exploration on its own, as it examined the Gianfranco Ferré codes of fashion with a careful and respectful scrutiny. With a free and courageous urge for experimentation, the codes became reference points of a journey which, taken through the eyes of others, leads to unforeseen destinations.

The Gianfranco Ferré Fall 2008/Winter 2009 collection, beautiful as it maybe, still underlines the fact that the fashion world lost a design genius with the passing of Gianfranco Ferré. Because, the truth is, exit after exit, though the house codes were respected to the fullest, the soul that has always bound the collection is gone.

This is not to say that the collection is not beautiful. In fact, its beauty makes this fashionista miss Gianfranco Ferré more. And somehow, it is also hard to accept that feeling of losing a great talent will never go away.
