MILAN, Feb 20, 2008 / FW/ — Collaborating with Vitra, a Swiss manufacturer of designer furniture, Normaluisa aimed for fashion equilibrium as she sent a collection expressing essential and measured elegance that in so many ways was complimentary to the ultra modern furniture on the background.
In an era where ‘lifestyle’ is the fashion focus, and everything were being sold as a ‘set’ like the ‘His & Hers’ towels, even the ‘His & Hers’ Mercedes-Benzes, breaking away from that mold is hard.
Still, this is a year of change and Normaluisa’s move to team up with a furniture manufacturer (this is actually the second time for her, the first time was with Kartell) instead of the more traditional choices of accessories companies, the Milan-based designer actually reached out to the leading edge internet generation where individualism in terms of dressing is of utmost importance.
The furniture used as background was not there just as a backdrop or for the theme. It was also there as a reminder of the freedom to express one’s personality by playing creatively with shapes and colors. Thus, the orange and fuchsia chairs did not match because they were never meant to match. Choosing non-matching items is exercising one’s freedom of choice.
So, as Normaluisa sent out bias-cut skirts that were slightly shirred with the use of big pleats, she alternates it with more linear, body-conscious silhouettes, again to create choices.
Thought the silhouettes vary, the collection was tight and coherent. Stylish details like —sleeves ballooning at the cuff, flat pleat for added motion in jackets and mini coats, a surprisingly sporty collar with drawstrings for short coats, coming in rich fabrics, ruffles for a rich touch to empire-style, ultra feminine cocktail dresses, featherweight cashmere for thin leggings, cardigans and mini dresses — pulled the collection together making everything gel.
