Roberto CavalliMILAN, Feb 24, 2008 / FW/ — Roberto Cavalli has lately been infatuated with Louis XIV, with the Spring Summer collection shown in the set up of Versailles for Fall Winter he has moved on to another of the Kings great landmarks. Going back into the city to the Opera Garnier in Paris.

Blending in fifties inspirations and ethnic elements inspired by Peru, Cavalli once more is showing us intricate details and designs. Playing with this idea he prints embroidery and knits on array of fabric weights. A chiffon dress with a knit print and a textured jacket with a flower embroidery print are just a few examples of Cavalli’s illusions this season. The outfits, embellishment wise, when looked at up close, are a lot simpler then they seem.

The setting at the Opera Garnier is perfect for the collection because Cavalli is playing with the ideas of Costumes and designing, in part, only for the visual effects. The only really important embellishments that can’t be faked are the sequins and sparkles, which are all over the collection. Not to say that Cavalli doesn’t have fine embellishments because the collection does have and array of beautiful flat and 3-D flower embroideries along with numerous lace details.

Skirts are full with and with out petticoats and this play on form transitions into fabric weights and transparencies. Layers of ruffles create full skirts and beautiful details on dresses while sequins on transparent chiffon create form in another way.

While it may not be one of Roberto Cavalli’s strongest collections the ideas are solid and modern. His attention to detail and courage to experiment are one of the reasons he is so well respected and known not only in Milan but around the world.
