PARIS, Feb 24, 2008 / FW/ — Day 2 is actually the official kick off of Paris Prêt-a-Porter Fall 2008, with Chinese designer Jefen opening the day and officially opening the season.

Jefen, who is now considered a mainstay of the Paris Fashion Week, presented a predominately black collection with heavy jeweled pieces and occasional use of “communist” red for accent (I guess to remind us where the influence came as if we did not know).

Fresh, modern with surprisingly strong western influences, Jefen is showing growth as a designer. “Its China girls goes to Paris, and does quite well,” commented my partner Errol after the show.

Next show was Lie Sang Bong, who is always a pleasure to see. For Fall 2008, the Korean-born designer had the most creative use of textile ranging from beautiful sheer printed pieces to the excellent embroidery reminiscent of Courrèges during the 1960’s.  (Photo at left from the Lie Sang Bong collection.)

Though we could definitely see the Korean influence it was not out of balance with overall continuity of the show.  The collection ended with a wonderful vocal performance by Kimera.

Our third show for the day was Rajesh Pratap Singh who is making his debut in Paris this season. And, as one of those things that happen only during fashion week, one of the benches collapsed and a woman hit the floor with quite a large bang before the show started. Then, as if it was one of those ‘Southern Baptist church’s revelation,’ a group of us discovered that half of the plastic cups being used to serve the (warm) champagne were leaking and dripping everywhere people walked.

However, once the show began all of the rocky start was forgotten and replaced with some truly nice pieces.  Rajesh Pratap Singh exercised control in the use of striking sari colors and leaf pattern embroidery (sometimes appliqué) on leather.  Overall, a very cohesive collection and a good first show for Rajesh.

For accessories, a definite trend this season is the use of the wedge heel, but only at Jefen the platform was absent.
