PARIS, Mar 5, 2008 / FW/ — To fans of Andrew Gn and Elie Saab, this season was a total surprise as these two designers presented collections that are minimalist by their standards, i.e., sans the embroidery, sans the sequins even sans the color.

Elie Saab

We had rare back stage access to Elie Saab this season before the show and it was interesting to note a confident calm in the air as models and staff prepared for the show.

On one side of the room was the designer giving an interview before a camera crew with most everyone else on the other side dressing and preparing.  It appeared this house was well organized and this carried through to the collection which showed just minutes later.

First to hit the runway were a series of dresses in black, rose red, navy blue, silver and green which stopped below the knee.  The red dresses, some solid and others with sequins, were notable, especially one early in the show, which was gathered in the front making it appear to be elegantly tied.

Following this, several black and white striped dresses were shown which reminded us of the 1920’s movie Metropolis and one interesting piece which used color shifting fabric that changed from forest green to black as the model moved.

Mixed into this collection was fur used to trim several pieces and sheer lacy materials.

Andrew Gn

Like Elie Saab who surprised his fans with his new minimalist approach, Andrew Gn, who showed earlier during the week also unveiled a collection without his signature elaborate embroidery.

Both Andrew Gn and Elie Saab are known for their penchant on embroidery, the more elaborate the embroidery are, the better. It’s part of their charm. It also has become part of their signature look.

Yet this season, both Andrew Gn and Elie Saab decided to use embroidery sparingly, as both of them tried to highlight the cut and the draping of the garments. Perhaps it is a way to demonstrate their mastery of tailoring techniques.

And as if both designers are working in tandem, both of them also toned down their color exuberance opting for a dark color palette with just splashes of red, navy or silver to brighten up the collection.

So I’m looking forward to seeing some different looking stuff come out from Couture Week. Maybe its me, but the designers haven’t produced anything new in the way of coats this year. I was on a blog site a few days ago and some woman said she’d found Italian designer coat site. So finally something really powerfully different…

do you know - except “in my arms” and “two hearts” from kylie minogue - who sings the other two songs from the show?
