JAKARTA, Aug 23, 2008 / FW/ — In the U.S., including Europe, red carpet dressing has become a sport. Eveningwear designers have to make a statement of sensuality and sexiness in one dress or gown.
But in Indonesia, or at least in Jakarta, where eveningwear is demure even sweet and quite frankly, more for the Miss Universe beauty pageant than the Oscars or Cannes.
Harry Ibrahim, Defrico Audy, Jeanne Ang and Hengky Kailwarang made sure that their ladies are the epitome of grace.
And though chances are these gowns and dresses are too tame for Hollywood’s red carpet, there’s a lot to be said for just being sweet and sassy.
Don’t be surprised though to see any of these creations during a beauty pageant.

JAKARTA, Aug 22, 2008 / FW/ — After the Moslem and Ethnic segments on the catwalk, it was time to see contemporary clothing. IPMI (Indonesian Fashion Designer Council) member, Priyo Oktaviano presented his vision of the modern Indonesian woman.
Fluid silhouettes intermixed with architectural shapes, Priyo Oktaviano’s vision can easily still be seen as ‘ethnic’ on the catwalks of New York, London, Milan and Paris. Whether this is good or bad depends on the eye of the beholder, the way beauty is.
Ethnicity is good, but with one of the objectives of Jakarta Fashion Week is to make Indonesia a source for high fashion, a wide range of silhouettes need to be offered.
Jakarta Fashion Week is being held from Aug 20 – 24 at the Fashion Tent, Pacific Place Jakarta. With an expected attendance of 5000 guests viewing more than 600 new designs from 47 designers comprising of 24 APPMI (Indonesian Fashion Designers Association) designers, 18 IPMI (Indonesian Fashion Designer Council) designers, one independent and four Australian designers, it is expected to be the fashion event of the year in the country.

JAKARTA, Aug 22, 2008 / FW/ — Unknown to many, Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, although officially it is not an Islamic state. (Indonesia is a republic.) So it is not surprising that Day 1 of Jakarta Fashion Week was dedicated to stylish Moslem women.
From the very beginning, fashion has always been free, bearing no allegiance to any government or any religion. It developed on its own. According to history, during the Middle Ages, when France and England were continuously at war with each other, the bearers of ‘fashion dolls’ (that was how new styles were disseminated during those days) are allowed to pass enemy lines in the name of fashion.
As the western world developed its style of dressing, so did the easterners. Religion of course influenced how people dress, and so did geography and climate.
In an era wherein geographical lines are blurred, thanks to mass communication and air travel, it is easy to forget for a westerner that ethnic and religion-dictate dressing still exist. Hence, it is refreshing to see these beautiful clothes on the runway that adheres to religious teaches while still making sure that the wearer looks chic.
Fashion is a free spirit, that is true, but it is also respectful of ones ethos and beliefs.

JAKARTA, Aug 22, 2008 / FW/ — Wednesday, Aug 20th was a historic fashion moment in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital. Opening its first ever fashion week under the title, Festival Mode Indonesia and Jakarta Fashion Week or FMI JFW for short, the Asian city puts its hat in the ring for the title Asian fashion capital, which up to today is still up for grabs.
A part of Southeast Asia, Indonesia is better known for its tourism industry than its fashion. With the launch of Jakarta Fashion Week, the show organizers, the Femina Group wants to change that.
“In many countries, the creative industry, including that of fashion, has proven to be one of the financial movers and shakers for a community. The flexible nature of the industry easily adapts to a variety of market situations, making it a powerful economic stronghold,” commented Mirta Kartohadiprodjo, CEO Femina Group, during the opening ceremonies.
The event which is being held with the support and in collaboration with the Tourism Office of Jakarta hopes to the Rp79.08 trillion or 4.74% contribution of the creative industry towards Indonesia’s GDP.
With Indonesia’s biggest names in fashion - Stefanus Hamy, Taruna Kusmayadi, Valentino Napitupulu, Defrico Audy, Chossy Latu, Hengki Kawilarang, Rusli Tjohnardi, Harry Ibrahim, Syahreza Muslim and Jeanny Ang on the list of designers who are unveiling their collections, Jakarta Fashion Week should generate the heat that usually accompanies a fashion week in the city and country it is being held.
With Australian designer Akira Isogawa also in the roster, the eyes of the international press in the Asia-Pacific region should also be following the event.
