Joop!: A Vision of Greta Garbo & Marlena Detreich

Sitting waiting for Joop! to begin, I am seated next to a buyer from Harrods in London, who
tells me she’s been invited to Diane Von Fustenberg, Vera Wang, Randolph Duke and Pamela Dennis.
I make a wild guess based on these designers that she buys eveningwear,
and I’m right first time! A Henri Bendels department store bag is tucked
under her legs and I can’t resist asking for a look at what a buyer buys for herself!
For the record; it’s a Bendel’s own label rust snakeskin leather knee-length
skirt and rust ribbed-wool halter-top to match. Joop’s men’s and women’s
collection had been strutting their stuff for a minute or two before
I realized that Supermodel Claudia Schaiffer was out there to support Joop,
her fellow German countryman.
Pants were cropped to mid shins and cuffs were trimmed with fur. Asymmetric
slashed black column gowns were edged with white rabbit trims. Short sock
warmers were worn over stilettos ski-pant style and, frankly, this plus the
Star Trek-inspired fabric pants were a little weird.
The winning combos of this collection were the lilac and coppery-gold pieces
together. Claudia, the ultimate blond, set the precedent for any blond who
wants to shine next fall. Wear lilac.
Grabbing an interview with Joop himself afterwards, he told me the
vision had come from Greta Garbo and Marlena Detreich.
“Detreich was the best designer ever. She combined day and evening wear as well as
men’s and women’s - it was the old glamour.
After all the high-tech, sparkles and silver space age nineties, that’s out.
Old values like gold are back.”
