Joseph Domingo LOS ANGELES, Oct 16, 2007 / FW / --- In a collection entitled ‘Goddess’, San Francisco-based designer Joseph Domingo demonstrated that he is ready to tackle the big boys of fashion by presenting a well-edited and coherent collection that definitely interested retail buyers who were in attendance.

Domingo, who is well-known in the Bay Area for his beautiful made-to-measure gowns, with a client list who are in San Francisco’s social register, made a surprising career move two years ago by deciding to launch an eponymous ready-to-wear line.

Deciding to show in Los Angeles instead of New York so that he can continue to cater to his loyal Northern California clientele, Domingo immediately gathered a new fan base with his elegant collections season after season.

And last night, in Culver City, the SRO crowd at Smashbox Studios gave him a standing ovation when he took his bow, a lot of them muttering that ‘Goddess’ is his best collection to date.

The front row, which was predominantly populated by journalists and Domingo’s San Francisco clients who made a trek to Los Angeles to support their favorite designer, predicted ‘this is THE SHOW that will propel Joseph to the world of ready-to-wear.’

Inspired by the idea of women as beauty goddesses, Joseph Domingo took his audience to a trip through the ages, from the mythical Mount Olympus, the home of Aphrodite to Egypt, home of the legendary Cleopatra, and modern-day Hollywood, which gave birth to Marilyn Monroe, who 50 years after her death is still considered the most popular sex symbol in America and the whole world.

With gold and pink as the base color palette, Domingo touched on the strongest trends of the Spring 2008 season – fluorescent colors, prints and quiet elegance.

Opening with a coral rose one-piece swimsuit embellished with golden paiettes, with the female model escorted by two Adonises dressed in gold swimsuits, Domingo set the tone of the collection and began his story line of beautiful women through the ages.

Presenting a capsule menswear collection, that was actually not lost on the audience, Domingo also demonstrated his range as a designer.

Still, though the men’s sportswear was sharply tailored, it became second fiddle to the womenswear line, as Domingo sent a beautiful floral pink and white sunburst skirt paired with a brief jacket, a white double-breasted coat, the bustier cocktail dress adorned with pink sequins and the finale, pink gown that was made of layered ruffles and ostrich feathers to the runway.

Though Domingo did not break new grounds in terms of a new fashion silhouette, he broke new grounds for himself as he translated his honed tailoring techniques from the lofty world of made-to-order garments to the fast-paced ready-to-wear environs.
