PARIS, Jan 23, 2006/ FW/ --- Showing only once a year for haute couture, Maurizio Galante did not disappoint his audience by presenting an enchantingly beautiful collection that is aptly entitled ‘Timeless.’
Drawing inspiration from all over the globe and different eras – from Arabian style tunics to exotic oriental themes, Galante fused them all perfectly, challenging the accepted description of fashion as being temporary.
Opening with a floral embroidered short coat with high collar, the audience immediately gave it a round of applause, understanding and seeing the intricacy and artistry of how the garment was constructed.
In fact, most of the 22 exits that were previewed garnered appreciative applause from the audience as the sensual silhouettes of antique lace, ribbon origami and feathers evoked the beauty of haute couture.
There was a 1960s feel in the collection, perhaps reminiscing the crescendo of haute couture. Silhouettes were fitted on the bodice flaring at the hips, to give it a very loose flow and a square and rectangular shape evocative of the MOD fashion era when Twiggy was the only supermodel.
Yet, though the time reference was suggestive of the 1960s, Maurizio Galante infused ancient patterns of dressing from the Arabian jalabiyah garments and abayeh coats without losing rhythm and focus.
High waisted pageboy trousers that were side buttoned and entirely covered by glass beads embroidered on silk tulle were complemented with similarly colored hose, creating an aura of Arabian Nights.
From today’s street wear, a pair of denim jeans and a jacket was covered with golden needles that seemed to say ‘touch me not’ but you will anyway, simply because you cannot resist it.
An original fabric by the designer, slim threads of different color that are packed so tightly that they look like micro accordion pleats from afar was constructed to be a mini skirt. This exit alone emphasizes Galante as an accomplished artist as well as a designer wherein he can turn a concept into reality.
Everything was lovely but one has to be cut above the rest and it goes to the deep crimson bolero jacket that is covered on one side with a line of dyed-to-match swan feathers!
This piece alone made it worthy for everyone in the audience to attend the show.
