Oscar Carvallo PARIS, Nov 8, 2004/ FW/ --- In a season where we have seen a litany of takes on ethnic chic from designers and fashion houses streaming from Barbara Bui to Bisrat Negassi and Kenzo (by Antonio Maras), along comes Venezuelan designer, Oscar Carvallo with his Indian chic.

Carvallo chose to set up shop at the beautiful Hotel Meurice to show his audacious and tasteful Spring Summer 2005 collection. The depth of the research was rich, and it showed throughout the collection.

Appropriately titled Electric Yopo, the collection immediately draws one into a world of mysticism and Indian Chamas. The psychedelic colors were an original take for such a theme.

His short, above the navel white T-shirt top with fringes raining from the shoulders will be a riot among younger women with fabulous bodies. It looks great with the multi-colored asymmetric skirt that Carvallo proposed. However, it will also wear well with Capri pants or tight jeans and heels.

The Venezuelan jetsetter loves Hispanic women of Latin descent and it is most apparent. Warm, beautiful, sultry and high cheekbones are the beauty codes for the day and night according to Carvallo.

One beautiful model, that could easily have been Pocahontas reincarnated for his show, embodies the overall spirit of the powerful collection. Her own natural beauty was only enhanced by the full, yet wearable makeup. Look for makeup inspirations from this show in the streets and next summer.

Some pieces in the collection are ultra short like his hot pants but not at all vulgar. His bustiers are dynamite and should light fire to many a night spot in Miami, Caracas, Barcelona, London, New York and Los Angeles. Although some pieces are transparent as evidenced in some of his dresses, they are elegant and are not gratuitous in the naked skin department.

I must say that his swimwear is bold and befitting of a sexy comic book heroine. The black one-piece number is hot. It has fringes running across the front. I can already predict a rise in the number of powwows when it hits the beach and hotel poolsides.

For the night, Carvallo also did dresses in silver and gold. The little gold number is one of my favorites. It has panels slashed away from it. It has just enough style to substitute itself in the place of the traditional little black dress for Spring Summer 2005.
