DeGeneres Stays as Host for Third Try at Emmys, Bicoastal Plans Canned
By: Jenny Bailly

cover NEW YORK, Oct 19, 2001 / -- Ellen DeGeneres will still host the third attempt at the Emmy Awards, now to be held November 4 at the Shubert Theatre in Los Angeles. The new venue is less than half the size of the original location, the 6,000-seat Shrine Auditorium.

The first rescheduling of the show, for October 7, was to include a satellite link to New York to accommodate cast members of award-heavy shows like "The Sopranos" and "Sex and the City" who had expressed concern about flying to the West Coast. That bicoastal plan has now been nixed, however.

CBS chief Les Moonves explained that the logistics of changing venues and creating a satellite link were "impossible to pull off."

Though Moonves confirmed that, "we're not going to have a live New York component," he was also firm in his resolve to let the show go on at least on one coast: "Broadway is going on, the World Series is going on, the NFL is going on. America is going on. And we are going on."

Speaking of the World Series, however, if this year's tournament goes to seven games, the final showdown will fall on the evening of November 4, conflicting with the primetime awards show.

Though Moonves has insisted that, "95 percent of the calls that I have received have been very positive," some big name stars, like Dennis Franz of "NYPD Blue," have openly spoken out against yet another rescheduling and many observers are questioning how many big names will actually attend the third-try, scaled-down event. Emmy chairman Bryce Zabel expressed hope saying, "A month will have passed since the October 7 date and we believe that many New York nominees would like to attend and that people are talking about it now."

While Sopranos stars James Gandolfini and Edie Falco were set to present from New York on October 7, it is unclear if they will make the trip out west next month. Filming for the new season of the HBO drama will likely already have begun. "The Sopranos" has been nominated for 22 awards.

Nominee Sarah Jessica Parker of "Sex and the City" fame is not anticipated to the grace the awards with her fashion flare; she's appearing in the off-Broadway production of "Wonder of the World" in Manhattan.

Emmy vet Gary Smith has been named producer of the November show. Don Mischer held that position for the first two attempts, but had to bow out because he is producing the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

There is no word yet on how red carpet coverage will be handled. The "Unity Dinner" (renamed from the traditional Governor's Ball for this year's event) will be held across the street from the Shubert at the Century Plaza Hotel. Attendees are still being asked to forgo sequins and spangles for more understated business attire.
