Michael Kors As Lord of the Dance: Designer Does Costumes for New Ballet
By: Jenny Bailly
NEW YORK, Oct 15, 2001 / -- Michael Kors for Celine is designing the costumes for the American
Ballet Theatre's latest production "Clear."
Renowned Australian choreographer Stanton Welch has created the contemporary ballet in
five movements, featuring seven men and one woman.
Michael Kors, creative director for the French house since 1998, explains the natural
connection between Celine and ballet: "Comfort, mobility and ease with an inherent sense of
elegance. These are the hallmarks of Celine and the best of dance."
The costumes won't feature any of the earthy shades, like paprika and lavender, or
vintage-style suede and macramé that popped up in Celine's spring 2002 collection on the
Paris runways last week, however. Kors has instead chosen simple nude matte jersey for his
first foray into the world of pirouettes. The sole female dancer will perform in a low-plunge
neckline halter jumpsuit, while her male castmates dance in boot-leg trousers with cummerbunds.
Celine President and CEO Jean-Marc Loubier thinks now is the perfect time for the designer
to branch into ballet. "We look forward to Celine's first costume design for a ballet.
Dance is a celebration of life, and life needs celebrating."
