Movie Review: Zoolander
Spoofing The Fashion World
By: Mari Davis

DALLAS, Feb 22, 2004/ FW/ --- Zoolander is one of those movies that I never get tired of watching. It’s probably because it is about the fashion world and since we are in the middle of the fashion season, I needed a few laughs to get through the day.

Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson star in this hilarious comedy spoofing the very glamorous world of fashion. And although the premise of the movie (a male model being a perfect assassin and Zoolander brainwashed the President of Malaysia because he is against child labor) is ludicrous, the movie still gives an inside look to the fashion world in general and the modeling world in general.

The movie begins with the VH1 Model of the Year Awards, and there are already lots of cameo roles with the fashion glitterati including Tom Ford. (Trivia: FashionWindows was covering that particular VH1 Awards when the movie was being filmed. Of course, no photos were allowed.)

Zoolander’s downward spiral as top male model began there when he lost the VH1 Model Award.

Scene after scene, it was a series of either funny one-liners or comedic situations that just kept the audience laughing. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson is a great comedic pair.

David Duchovny appears as an aging “hand model” and discusses with Zoolander and Matilda, a reporter for Time Magazine a conspiracy theory about male models being the hired gun since Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.

Very far fetched, don’t you think so? But in the movie, in its silly premise, this supposition makes sense.

And that is what made the movie hilarious - Ludicrous assumptions and silly situations. If you have seen the movie, try watching it again. There are always little nuggets that you might have missed during the first time you saw it. For me, the movie gets more hilarious every time I watch it.
