CBS To Air Lingerie Show

NEW YORK, Jul 22, 2002/ FW/ --- Undaunted by the FCC complaints that plagued ABC after it aired a
Victoria's Secret fashion show last fall, CBS Monday defended its decision to air the
lingerie purveyor's next special.
The provocative program, set to air during November sweeps, may even herald a whole new
era for the Tiffany network.
CBS president Leslie Moonves told reporters at the Television Critics Association press
tour Monday that, "This isn't your grandmother's CBS."
When asked if a special that features scantily clad women wearing next to nothing on a
catwalk undermines CBS's traditionally clean, more mature image, Moonves replied, "That's
why we did it."
Victoria's Secret's one-hour "Christmas Dreams and Fantasies" fashion show drew about
12.4 million viewers to ABC last November, but also garnered its fair share of complaints.
It was a television first; the year before, the lingerie purveyor aired its show only on the
Internet.
Organizations like the National Organization for Women and the Parents Television Council
immediately spoke out against the primetime premiere of models like Tyra Banks and Anouck
Lepere wearing ensembles that included white leather corsets and lace thongs.
The FCC sent a letter to complainants in March though, ruling that they had no basis for
action as the program was not, in its view, "so graphic or explicit as to be patently
offensive."
CBS, which announced last month that it had inked the deal with Victoria's Secret to air
its next fall fashion show, yesterday downplayed the sexual content of the program even
further.
"It's a lark. It's an hour of programming. It's fun," said Nancy Tellem, the network's
programming president.
