NEW YORK, Jan 7, 2002/ FW/ --- December 2001 was truly a month of giving for Swatch.
First was the charity auction at Sotheby's which raised $800,000 for God's Love We Deliver,
an organization that feeds homebound people in New York City living with AIDS.
During the same month, Swatch, together with Shaquille O'Neal hosted a weekend for the
New York City children and teenagers whose mothers or fathers were lost in the line
of duty on September 11th.
Together with NYC firefighter John Wilson, the children were flown in Los Angeles for
a weekend with Shaquille O'Neal and to watch the LA Lakers Game at Staples Center last
Dec 14. The children also visited Universal Studios and attended the opening of the
new Swatch store at Hollywood & Highland.
The children were also present when Shaquille made an imprint of his size 22 sneakers in
the cement at Mann's Chinese Theater.
In keeping with Swatch's history of positive provocation and joie de
vivre, Swatch has enlisted the help of both celebrity and out-of-the-ordinary
artists who have transformed the gigantic sneakers into unique, personal
murals.
In addition to Shaquille himself, sneaker designers include Thomas Von
Essen -- FDNY Commissioner, Bernard B. Kerik -- NYPD Commissioner, Melanie
Griffith & Antonio Banderas, the cast of the hit Broadway show "The Producers"
as well as casts of TV's "NYPD Blue," "the Sopranos," and Pamela Anderson &
the cast of "VIP".
The super-size sneakers was unveiled by Shaq and special guests last December 15 at the
Swatch store (adjacent to Mann's) and remained on view until December 24
for silent bidding at the store and at www.swatch.com for silent bidding.
Benefits from the auction of Shaq's sneakers was given to the New York Police & Fire
Widows' & Children's Benefit Fund; an organization that gives an immediate
disbursement to every family that loses someone.
